There are days when the walls close in a little, and the clouds seem to hover heavy overhead. I have those days when nothing works, and I struggle and flop all the way through from sunrise to dusk and I think, I need a refuge from all of this. There’s nothing this world can offer me that helps when I’m neck deep in broken moments. When I’m looking for a haven, He is there. The good news is, that we have a refuge that remains steady, even when life swirls tight, in a torrent of hurts and sickness and struggles.
God is that sacred covering. He is the place we can run to and take cover. The other day, I shared this image here:
And now, as I think about this idea of God as a refuge, I see precisely what this verse means. Whether we’re hurting, or grieving, or fearful or ill, He is a safe place to be. He is that steady rock to which we can cling. His steady, assured grace is the only place where we can truly find rest for our weary souls. His hands are the only ones capable of binding the wounds we receive, this side of glory. He is a safe place to be.
Kathy Howard has written a wonderful resource for when you need to cling to Him a little tighter. Her 12 week, topical Devotional book, God is My Refuge: 12 Weeks of Devotions and Scripture Memory for Troubled Times, offers not only amazing encouragement, but also technique and encouragement for hiding the Word in our hearts. The book is divided into subjects, such as Fear, Temptation, and Discontent. Under each heading you will be blessed to discover a short, applicable devotion, a couple of brief questions to help you reflect, as well as a key scripture to memorize.
What I love about this book, is that whatever my struggle is, I can turn directly to it, and find comfort and reassurance in the truth of Christ.
If you’re looking for an encouraging, useful devotional this new year, this is a great one to start off with.
